Viterbo University invites applications for a Full Time, 12 month Academic Advisor.  The Academic Advisor will work as part of the Center for Student Success and will aid in meeting outcomes set forth in the Title III program grant, Pathways to Student Success. 

This person will provide services including academic advising, creation of student success plans, major selection, career programming, student success strategies, and referral to campus services and academic supports.  The advisor will also plan and present career outreach programming and workshops to students in classroom settings, residence halls, and facilitate career sessions at special events.  The advisor will serve as the primary point of contact during the students' first two years with the goal of improving retention and graduation rates.   This person will collaborate with the Director of Career Services, Title III staff, faculty, and other university personnel.  This is a three-year grant funded position.

Advising Responsibilities (70%):

  • Advise select freshmen, sophomore, and first semester transfer students; including, but not limited to, Undeclared majors
  • Establish relationships with advisees through regular meetings and development of outreach strategies, such as virtual and drop-in office hours
  • Assist students with the transition to college and their major areas of study
  • Utilize the Early Alert system to ensure student success through individual follow-up with students
  • Assist students in developing individual academic degree plans, review program requirements, and educate students in the use of advising technology tools
  • Develop creative marketing strategies to promote programming and services
  • Participate in campus events such as new student registration, scholarship events and orientation
  • Respond to needs of student visitors to the Center for Student Success, as needed, via phone, drop-in, or online chat

Career Responsibilities (10%):

  • Develop, coordinate and facilitate career workshops, retreats, and other activities focused on career counseling/planning
  • Collaborate with Career Services on career related activities

Other Responsibilities (20%):

  • Track efforts toward achieving grant outcomes and submit monthly reports
  • Participate actively in Title III meetings to help facilitate continuous evaluation on progress towards grant objectives  
  • Carry out other responsibilities based on student needs and the goals of the Title III project

Required Qualifications:

  • Master's degree required, preferably in higher education, counseling or related field
  • Previous experience in academic or career advising
  • Well-developed interpersonal, presentation, and group facilitation skills
  • Strong attention to detail and excellent organizational skills
  • Ability to work independently while maintaining collaborative spirit with colleagues
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite
  • Position requires the ability and willingness to do occasional evening and weekend hours as needed

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Preference given to individuals with previous experience in career services or other student services areas
  • Some experience in program coordination and development in a college/university environment
