Viterbo University is seeking a Benefits Specialist. The Benefits Specialist is responsible for providing a variety of professional level human resources services to campus employees including but not limited to, employee benefits, COBRA administration, employee leaves of absences, FMLA, workers compensation, and tuition remission.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Support all employee benefits programs including, health, dental, long term disability, flexible spending, retirement, and life insurance.
  • Support employees with resolving insurance problems by interpreting benefits policies and procedures, build working relationships with insurance reps to ensure problems are resolved quickly and efficiently.
  • Assist management and plan providers with renewal process. Communicate plan design changes, create employee communication, organize open enrollment meetings and process open enrollment changes.
  • Promote a customer service-oriented work environment to aid in efficiency and employee satisfaction, created benefits web portal to provide on centralized location to obtain plan documents, forms, and other valuable information in regards to employee benefits.
  • Support employee wellbeing programming.
  • Manage the Tuition Remission/Exchange Process. Work with Financial Aid and the Admissions Office to ensure timely processing of applications.
  • Workers Comp- Review and analyze injury/accident reports to determine safety issues and trends, recommend corrective action and ensure implementation of corrective plans to prevent recurrence. Process, investigate and monitor worker compensation claims as necessary. Manage the return to work program. Assist worker's compensation carrier in investigation of claims. Maintain the OSHA 300, 300A, and 301 logs.
  • Comply with federal, state, and local laws by keeping up to date on employment laws to ensure compliance with FMLA, ADA, and FLSA regulations.
  • Manage employee FMLA requests, work with payroll coordinator to ensure appropriate leave allocation.
  • Process end of employment paper work for employees in regards to benefits. Process COBRA paperwork and coordinate COBRA billing if necessary
  • Assist payroll with Unemployment claims processing and/or hearings.
  • Serve on campus-wide committees as appropriate
  • Participates on Human Resources projects and initiatives
  • Provide general human resources assistance to employees and serve as a support to the HR Generalist and the Payroll Office.
  • Assist with employee requests regarding human resources rules and regulations
  • Maintain strong and cooperative working relationships with other university departments.
  • Perform other duties, responsibilities, or special projects as assigned

General Requirements/Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Human Resources or a related field required.
  • 1-3 years of experience in an administrative and customer service based support role or related area is required
  • 2-3 years of experience in a Human Resources support role (i.e. payroll/benefits) is preferred
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office
  • Effective written and oral communication skills
  • Strong attention to detail and critical thinking skills
  • Strong organizational and time management skills; ability to multitask and prioritize effectively
  • Ability to work independently and under minimal supervision
