Viterbo University invites applications for a Full Time Qualified Training Therapist. This position is temporarily full time through May 2021, with the opportunity to continue in Fall of 2021 in a part time capacity. 

General Position Description:  The full-time Qualified Training Therapist provides short-term counseling, case management, crisis intervention, psycho-educational programming, and other counseling-related services as per the direction of the Director of Counseling Services.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:  The following are the assigned duties.  The absence of specific statements of duties does not exclude those tasks from the position if the work is similar, related or a logical assignment of the position.


  • Provides short-term counseling to enrolled students.
    • Provides counseling for enrolled students who present with emotional, personal, or psychological concerns.
    • Provides counseling for enrolled students with focus on bereavement, depression, anxiety, eating disorders, family relations, interpersonal relationships, reconciliation, relationship violence, sexual assault, stress management, substance abuse, suicide prevention, and technology addictions under the supervision of the Director of Counseling Services.
    • Conducts intake interviews, develops treatment plans, and evaluates client progress under the supervision of the Director of Counseling Services.

  • Consults with and collaborates with University personnel and off-campus mental health and psychiatric services.
  • Offers consultation to faculty, administrators, and other university employees related to student concerns when the Director of Counseling Services is not available.
  • Refers to appropriate professionals for assessment and treatment and follow up as needed.
  • Maintains clinical case files in accordance with legal, ethical, professional standards, and prudent professional practice.
  • Makes effective use of scheduling software.


  • Assists with emergency interventions and coordination of treatment plans with necessary campus and community resources.
  • Assists and/or manages crisis intervention according to procedures with referral to campus and community resources as needed. Provides follow-up support for the campus community, providing services as needed.
  • Maybe asked to assist with emergency duties during and after the regular office hours.
  • Remains informed of emergency policy and procedures for the unit as well as the University. 


  • Assist in maintaining the Counseling Services web site to keep students up to date on resources and programs available for support.
  • Assesses need for, plans, coordinates, and advertises group counseling for small groups interested in focusing on a particular area in collaboration with faculty in the master's in Mental Health Counseling program. Examples:  anxiety, bereavement, depression, exam anxiety, graduating senior support group, interpersonal communications, international student support group, interpersonal relations, male student support group, mindfulness practice for stress reduction, relationship issues, relaxation, and survivors of sexual trauma.
  • Provides psycho-educational programming for students and employees.
  • Plans and implements campus-wide promotional print and social media campaigns and education materials for mental health maintenance and promotion.
  • Provides consultation and training to student development staff, student services staff, faculty and other Viterbo employees regarding psychological development and behavioral health matters.
  • Provides gatekeeper training to pertinent student and employee groups.
  • Provides and displays information to students and/or families at events such as STAR registrations, new student orientation programs, Athletic team trainings, RA trainings and the Welcome Back Bash.


Master's Degree in a Counseling or licensed as a mental health counselor required.  LPC-IT or an equivalent license in a mental health field required.  Must be licensable in the state of Wisconsin.

Preferred Experience: (a) demonstrated competence in clinical and crisis intervention skills, (b) strong student orientation, (c) outreach to students via health promotions, (d) experience assessing substance abuse, and (e) knowledge of ethical, legal and university standards and regulations.
