Under the direct supervision of the Assistant Director of Recreation and Leadership, the sport programs graduate assistant will be responsible for the daily coordination and overall management of the competitive sports and digital recreation programs. This position will support the assistant director by serving as an invaluable link between the program participants and the professional staff. The individual will gain and apply leadership experience, as well as become more adept at management, programming, assessment, marketing, supervision, etc. The goal is to place one on course to be a well-rounded professional in the field of their choice.

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Competitive Sports (Intramurals, Sport Clubs, Special Events):

  • Plan, promote, and administer intramural leagues including registration, scheduling, verification of eligibility and player status, supervision of play, completion of paperwork, league reports, and evaluations.
  • Ensure that accurate program information, registration, records, and processes are updated as needed.
  • Work with the Assistant Director and various committees to plan, organize, coordinate, promote, and facilitate special event programs, including solicitation, promotions, scheduling, registration, supervision of activity, completion of paperwork, and event reports and evaluations.
  • Oversee the intramural and special event contests, ensure participation takes place in a safe and controlled manner, and diffuse potential problems involving spectators and/or participants.
  • Communicate with Assistant Director the status of leagues and events; report any problems (i.e. ejections, sportsmanship issues, forfeits, staffing concerns, etc.).
  • Collaborate with Western Technical College Intramural Coordinator as necessary.

 

Digital Recreation Responsibilities:

  • Work with the Assistant Director on the implementation of digital recreation activities on campus.
  • Evaluate and make recommendations on programmatic offerings.
  • Plan, organize, coordinate, promote, and facilitate digital recreation events including solicitation, promotions, scheduling, registration, supervision of activity, completion of paperwork, and event reports and evaluations.

 

Personnel

  • Recruit, hire, train, supervise, schedule, and evaluate all competitive sports and digital recreation staff.

 

Administration

  • Develop and implement policies and procedures that ensure safe participation.
  • Keep abreast with industry trends and assess new as well as current programming.
  • Provide Assistant Director with budget needs and oversee inventory control of competitive sports and digital recreation program equipment.

 

Carry out other responsibilities as assigned by the Assistant Director of Recreation and Leadership.

 

Appointment: This is a 10month paid assistantship, beginning on or before January 18, 2021 and extends through May 31, 2022. Hours will vary based on the needs of the department, but not to exceed an average of 29 hours/week (with the exception of holidays and university closures) and will include nights and weekends. In addition to free tuition, the intern will be compensated with a stipend, paid bi-monthly.

Qualification: Acceptance into one of the following Viterbo University graduate programs, Master of Arts in Education, Master of Arts in Servant Leadership, Master of Business Administration; current CPR/AED and First Aid certification or willingness to obtain certification; positive attitude and strong work ethic.

Preferred Qualifications: Prior program planning experience. Work experience in a university recreation setting. Desire to work in a higher education recreational environment.
